A few definitions and a little bit of history
Reiki is a gentle, hands-on healing modality that aids in relieving stress and restoring balance which, in turn, promotes and engages the client’s innate healing processes. Over 3000 years old and originating in Tibet, Reiki was revitalized in the 19th century by Dr. Usui, a Japanese physician and Buddhist monk. Reiki is therapy without words, physical manipulation or exercise. It is quiet and thoughtful and the client is completely at the center of receiving. It’s an exponential hug and vitamin in energy form.
Chakra is an ancient Sanskrit word meaning “spinning wheel of light”. And these spinning wheels manage our flow of energy physically, emotionally and spiritually. There are many different types of Chakra systems throughout the world but most agree that there are 7 major ones – beginning at the base of the spine and ending at the top of the head. There are 7 days in the week, 7 notes in a musical scale, 7 colors in the rainbow, to which the Chakras correspond – red, yellow, orange, green, blue, indigo and violet. You want your Chakras to be balanced and spinning, not too fast or too slow, processing energy information optimally from inside and outside your body – like an air conditioner filter - filtering in and filtering out, wonderfully protective. And an important aspect of a session as I was taught is balancing the Chakras. A side note – I love a good complement; and a session is just that. I believe that Western medicine is beginning to truly, and enthusiastically, embrace some Eastern modalities, as well as nutrition and exercise, to help patients feel better, heal holistically and maintain vital energy.
